SPEAKER: SEMA YILDIRIM, ESQ.

SPEAKER'S BIO:  Sema Yildirim was born and raised in Germany to Turkish parents. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1992 and became a U.S. citizen in 1999. As a fluent speaker of German, Turkish, and English and as the product of three distinct cultures, Sema is comfortable navigating her way through an increasingly diverse landscape. Helping others do the same served as her motivation to pursue a career in law after she graduated from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah Georgia with a degree in Political Science. She enrolled in Stetson University’s College of Law, serving as a member of the International Moot Court Board. During this time she also interned for the Chief Judge of Florida’s Second District Court of Appeal and for the Judge of the U.S. District Court of the Middle Florida District.

Sema opened her own law firm in 2005, focusing on family and immigration law but also practicing criminal defense.  The philosophy that guides her practice is the understanding that any given case represents a client’s life and has a potential of changing that client’s future and life. As such, Sema does not take her clients’ trust and confidence in retaining her law office lightly, and she understands that the client’s concerns are more than a lawsuit or a court case—her firm is not a "law factory." Sema creates a strong personal relationship with her clients, making sure that they understand the procedures and language of the legal process, and using their input to better serve them.

Giving back to the community is a priority for Sema. She has offered free public presentations on Fathers’ Rights and Immigrants’ Rights. Sema also contributes to the legal community, and in 2015 her article "The Pitfall of International Love" was published in the Hillsborough County Bar Association’s LAWYER magazine, discussing the complications that can arise in marriage with non-U.S. citizens. She has been an active member of the Stann Givens Family Law Inn of Court here in Tampa for many years.

Sema takes time to mentor young attorneys who reach out to her and guides them in the practice of law. She frequently makes herself available to answer family law and immigration law related questions when more seasoned fellow attorneys call in need of help.
