SPEAKER: John Yanchunis, Esquire with Morgan & Morgan’s Complex Litigation Group

TOPIC:  “Introduction to Federal Court and Class Action Litigation”

SUMMARY: John Yanchunis, who leads the nationwide class action practice at Morgan  & Morgan, will discuss the perceived byzantine practice in federal courts, address practice tips and provide a level of comfort if you ever find yourself with a case in the federal courts. To make the presentation a little more interesting, Mr. Yanchunis will discuss class action litigation, and cases ripped from today’s headlines, such as the privacy litigation of Yahoo, Equifax, and Facebook.

TBPA is no longer accepting reservations via email or mail. 

TBPA reserves the right to change/substitute luncheon speakers, topics or entrées as necessary due to unexpected circumstances. Cancellations for paid-in-full reservations prior to the RSVP Deadline will be refunded, subject to a $2.00 administrative fee.  After the RSVP Deadline, no refunds will be provided and payment in full will be due regardless of attendance. Cancellation correspondence may be sent to luncheon@tbpa.org.

Parking: Please note that The Tampa Club validates parking in the Bank of America parking garage during lunchtime hours for the discounted $2.00 rate.  Please bring your parking ticket with you and have The Tampa Club Receptionist validate it for you.

SPEAKER: JOHN YANCHUNIS, Esq.

SPEAKER'S BIO:  John Yanchunis  leads the National Consumer Class Action section of Morgan & Morgan’s Complex Litigation Group. His  practice—which began after completing a two-year clerkship with United States District Judge Carl O. Bue, Jr., Southern District of Texas—has concentrated on complex litigation and spans over 35 years, including consumer class actions for more than two-thirds of that time.  He has represented consumers in a wide range of class actions, and because of recent events, he has been involved in a number of class actions seeking to protect the privacy of consumers. He  served as co-lead counsel in the successful prosecution and settlement of perhaps the two the largest class action cases in the United States:  Fresco v. Automotive Directions, Inc., No. 03-61063-JEM (S.D. Fla.), and Fresco v. R.L. Polk, No. 07-cv-60695-JEM (S.D. Fla.).  These cases involved the advocacy for and protection of the important privacy rights of a class comprising over 225 million individuals throughout the United States and its territories. He  achieved noteworthy results in the settlement of a series of data breach cases.  For example, he served as co-lead counsel in the MDL case In re The Home Depot, Inc. Customer Data Security Data Breach Litigation, No. 1:14-md-02583-TWT (N.D. Ga.) (consumer class cases) , he currently serves on the Executive Committee overseeing the consumer class, the financial institution class, and the shareholder derivative litigation pending against Target Corporation—one of the largest data-breach cases to date—in In re Target Corporation Customer Data Security Breach Litigation, MDL No. 2522 (D. Minn.).  He is also sole lead counsel in the largest data breach case ever filed involving an estimated 2.85 billion users  around the globe In re: Yahoo! Inc. Customer Data Security Breach Litigation, No. 16-MD-02752-LHK (N.D. Cal.),  and he  was appointed and presently serve on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in In Re Equifax, Inc. Customer Data Security Breach  Litigation, 1:17-md-2800 (N.D. Georgia), to name a few. He has also filed two class actions against Facebook for its violations of consumers’ privacy rights.Mr. Yanchunis  graduated from the University of  Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received his Juris Doctorate , magna cum laude , from South Texas College of Law.   He has served as an elected member of  the Young Lawyers  Board of Governors of The Florida Bar and  the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar, and  was appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to the Florida Board of Bar Examiners which he knows serves as an Emeritus Member.  He has served in numerous committees of The Florida Bar.
