TOPIC:  An Ethical View From The Bench: Paralegals and Legal Assistants Beware

SUMMARY: This presentation will discuss various situational ethical dilemmas that paralegals/legal assistants may be confronted with throughout the day. The presentation will include a discussion of the Canons as set forth by the NALA.

TBPA is no longer accepting reservations via email or mail. 

TBPA reserves the right to change/substitute luncheon speakers, topics or entrées as necessary due to unexpected circumstances. Cancellations for paid-in-full reservations prior to the RSVP Deadline will be refunded, subject to a $2.00 administrative fee.  After the RSVP Deadline, no refunds will be provided and payment in full will be due regardless of attendance. Cancellation correspondence may be sent to luncheon@tbpa.org.

Parking: Please note that The Tampa Club validates parking in the Bank of America parking garage during lunchtime hours for the discounted $3.00 rate.  Please bring your parking ticket with you and have The Tampa Club Receptionist validate it for you.

Judge Cheryl Thomas is currently serving as a Hillsborough County Circuit Court Judge for the 13th Judicial Circuit in the Circuit Civil Division where she presides over civil claims of a value in excess of $15,000, which include medical malpractice, eminent domain, and foreclosures. She was appointed as a circuit court judge in August 2010. She was reelected for a six-year term in April 2012. She previously served as a Hillsborough County Court Judge from January 2001 through January 2010.

Judge Thomas received her Juris Doctor and her Bachelor of Arts Degrees from the University of Florida in December 1981 and August 1979, respectively. Prior to her appointment to the bench she served as an Asst. Attorney General for the State of Florida; an Asst. General Counsel for the Florida Dept. of Transportation; Staff Counsel for the Florida Bar and as Assistant State Attorneys in the Sixth and Ninth Circuits. She was in private practice from July 1994 thru June 1997. Judge Thomas also served as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corp for the United States Army and the U.S. Army Reserves.

Judge Thomas professional associations have included Florida Bar Member since 1982, Faculty Member of New Judges College; William Reece Smith Inn of Court, Ferguson-White Inn of Court, Hillsborough County Bar Association, George Edgecomb Bar Association and Hillsborough Association of Women Lawyers.

Judge Thomas’s community service has included the MOAR Advisory Board, for the Attorney General Mentoring Program; Adams Middle School Mentoring/Role model for teenage girls, Presenter for the “Shock” Program, Speaker Crime Intervention Teen Summit and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. She was a long-standing member of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and currently attends The First Baptist Church of Progress Village. She is married to Frederick Thomas and they have two adult children: a lawyer and a high school Math teacher.
